How to perform the Oil Massage?
A warm oil head massage should be done at least thrice a week especially in winter. (Caution: Avoid exposure to cold climate and bathing with cold water after oil massage on head). Give yourself a daily massage for 5-10 minutes to stimulate circulation, which is vital for healthy hair growth. Using your fingers (knuckles), work over the surface of the scalp, temples and back of the head, applying pressure in circular movements. Don’t be too rough when you are massaging your scalp. Vigorous pulling or brushing can actually pull hair out of your head and damage the hair. Wash hair and head with luke warm water.
Massaging the scalp and hair with warm oil, preferably infused with hair-friendly herbs, is the best way to nourish the scalp and hair topically. Not only does the massage work wonders for your hair, but it also relaxes the mind and nervous system.
Selection of oil according to PrakrutiNormally it is good to use Coconut oil or sesame oil processed with different herbs which have hair nourishing and soothing properties. Herbs like Bhringraj, Amla, etc. are added to these base oils to provide nourishment and improve the quality of hair and Brahmi etc are added to soothe the Nervous system.
Individuals with Pitta Prakruti should select oils with base of coconut oil whereas those with Vata or Kapha Prakruti should use Sesame oil as the base.
Japakusum oil (The oil prepared from hibiscus and other hair friendly herbs in sesame base) and Japakusum lotion is considered as the best oil / lotion for massage on head for all three types of constitution i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha types. Ayurvedic ShampooBesides using the right oil, it is also important to use suitable shampoo’s for hair. Shampoos with strong chemicals are the main cause for hair fall and degeneration in hair quality. Ayurveda suggests mild natural shampoo to cleanse and condition the hair. Traditionally flour of Moong (Green Gram) is used to clean the hair. The flour is mixed with water to form soft paste and this paste is used to clean the hair.
Soapnuts boiled in water with Shikakai are also used to shampoo the hair. Soapnut helps to clean the hair of extra oil and grime. Shikakai conditions the hair while washing and neutralizes the strong effects of Soapnut.
Ayurvedic Conditioners -1) Mixture of Amla powder and yogurt can be used as a pack to condition the hair. Keep the pack for 30 minutes and wash with luke warm water.2) Fenugreek seeds soaked overnight and made into a paste form can be used for conditioning and for curing Dandruff.3) Boil Hibiscus leaves in water and squeeze them. Use the liquid prepared by straining the mixture to rinse the hair after shampoo for some time. Rinse with water to have soft and nourished hair.4) Henna soaked in water with lemon juice and Amla powder can be also used as a conditioner. Caution – Henna colors the hair, this combination should be used carefully by those who would not like to change the color of their hair.
Dandruff TreatmentIndividuals with Dandruff problems should wash hair at least twice a week. They should regularly oil the scalp with medicated oil in order to avoid dryness of scalp which can result in hair fall. Those with dandruff due to extra oiliness of scalp should remove the oil from hair completely while washing the hair. Use of Neem Powder is effective to reduce the dandruff. Boil 1 table spoon of Neem powder in a cup of water and use to rinse the hair and scalp. Keep it in the hair for 5 -7 minutes. Alternatively, mix the Neem powder with water and apply as pack on the scalp. Keep for 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly with water.
