Addressing low-income communities and high-risk underserved
populations throughout the United States and its territories

Food Pantry

COPPER BASIN FOOD PANTRY

The Copper Basin Food Pantry provides emergency food assistance and nutrition and budgeting classes to low income residents of Eastern Pinal and Southern Gila Counties, which are among the poorest in the State of Arizona, (approximately 67% of the residents served live at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Guideline). Historically, these areas have suffered high incidences of poverty and unemployment that pose significant health and nutrition risks. The average annual income for 47% of households stands at $10,000 or less, as compared to the rest of the State of Arizona, which is around $30,000 per year. In considering the above information, the pantry works toward addressing the needs of its target population by providing:

• Food assistance to low-income families and individuals.
• Nutrition classes (Diabetic Diet, etc.).
• Budgeting classes.
• Information and referral services.
• Distribution of food at the Pantry site and delivery to non-ambulatory clients.
• Services in English and Spanish.

Project Highlights

The Copper Basin Food Pantry:
• Serves over 14,000 individuals and distributes approximately 116,240 pounds of food annually.
• Is in the process of developing an after school Children’s Café and Sewing Cooperative for Seniors.
• Coordinates with the two major school districts and local churches to implement food drives.
• Coordinates its activities with its Advisory Group, whose participants represent the various communities within the targeted area, thus insuring actual needs of residents are being addressed.
