GO FOR IT! (¡TU PUEDES!) TOBACCO CESSATION
The long-term goal of the Border Health Foundation in its ¡Tu Puedes! Prevention Program is to provide tobacco awareness, education and cessation activities to young adults (age 18-24) in diverse sectors of the U.S. –Mexico borderlands. Goals and Objectives
• Improve knowledge on consequences of tobacco use and awareness of cessation among young adult predominantly Hispanic smokers (18-24)
• Ensure that young minority adults are integrally involved in project design and activities.
• Provide Go For It! / Tu Puedes! Cessation support activities to different cultural sectors of 18-24 year olds.
• Provide tobacco-free social activities for young adults.
• Evaluate project approach and activities to determine and improve project effectiveness with targeted young adults.
Program Activities:
• Employing and involving young adults of 18-24 years old in the design and delivery of program services.
• Combining informal and formal outreach with education and awareness to 4500 target-age young adults.
• Use of palm cards and fliers.
• Young adult bi-weekly cessation support groups with a social club orientation in both English and local borderland Spanish.
• Outreach on weekend nights at several U.S.- Mexico border crossings.
• Smoke-free dances.
• Young adult Advisory Panels to provide local cultural expertise and feedback.
• Quarterly contests for bilingual prevention/cessation messages and art images for use in project materials.
• Process and outcome evaluations using quantitative and qualitative techniques to track results and program effectiveness.
